Interview with Mother Love Letters’ Violet Carol
We asked Mother Love Letters author Violet Carol what it was like to work with us on branding her Substack publication. For an look at the branding, read the full case study.
Do you have any advice on branding for others?
Branding is its own form of art. I'm a writer, not a graphic designer. I can write a personal essay in heavy metaphor, but I have no idea how to incorporate multiple visual elements to cultivate an aesthetic. I don't believe in doing it all on your own. And I strongly believe that you make better art when you collaborate with other artists. I would never have been able to bring my Substack to visual life without you!
How did you feel before the branding process?
I felt excited, which is why I knew it was time for me to bring more of what I wanted for my Substack to life. I had a vision but no idea how to execute it, and I fully trusted you to make magic out of my madness.
How do you feel now?
I feel so at ease because my fixed, visual aesthetic now matches my writing in the way I want it to feel seen. My Substack is an online space. It has to draw eyes; that's the nature of sharing work on the internet. Now that there are colors and graphics and cohesive design elements that evoke a set of feelings I want to highlight, I feel freer in my writing because my writing is now all I'm focused on. I love a cinematic moment, a little world-building, and this was my way of doing so on my Substack.
What did you walk away with after working together?
Confidence, ease, and enthusiasm.
